Toots & The Maytals - Got To Be Tough (LP)
Toots Hibbert grew up as the youngest of seven siblings and received his musical education by singing gospels in a church choir.
As a teenager he left his home town and moved to the capital Kingston. There he met Raleigh Gordon and Jerry Matthias and founded the Maytals (also known as Toots and the Maytals) with them. The group became one of Jamaica's most popular vocal ensembles in the 1960s, working with famous producers such as Coxsone Dodd, Prince Buster, Byron Lee and Leslie Kong.
Hibbert was one of the first artists to use the word "reggae". His 1968 single Do The Reggay, an early reggae song, is considered the first mention of the word on record.
Hibbert also appeared in the groundbreaking Jamaican film The Harder They Come (1972). Most recently, Hibbert and his band have toured regularly around the world.
Toots Hibbert died in Kingston on 11 September 2020 as a result of a corona virus infection. This is his last studio work.
