Following on from Soul Jazz Records' earlier Jackie Mittoo "The Keyboard King at Studio One" comes Jackie Mittoo and The Soul Brothers "Last Train To Skaville". Jackie Mittoo is one of the most important artists in the history of Jamaican music. As founding member of the legendary Skatalites, as in-house arranger/producer at Studio One and as a solo artist in his own right leading groups such as The Soul Brothers, Sound Dimension and Soul Vendors. These classic and rare recordings were made in the mid-1960s at Studio One. The Soul Brothers bridged the gap between Ska and the arrival of Rocksteady mixing it all up with Funk, Jazz and Latin styles. The Soul Brothers recorded at Studio One between 1965-1967. This was the transitionary period between Ska and Rocksteady where the music was a mixture of Funk, Latin and Jazz sometimes with a reminder of Ska and the hint of Rocksteady. The previous era of Ska had been dominated by the Skatalites. The Skatalites were made up of Don Drummond, Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Knibbs, Lloyd Brevett, Tommy McCook, Ernest Ranglin and Lester Sterling. Formed in 1963, The Skatalites were the first in-house band at Studio One and created scores of classic hits such as "Guns of Navaronne", "Man in the Street", "El Pussy Cat" and many more. Unfortunately the strong personalities in the group meant that The Skatalites stayed together for less than two years. It was also around this time that the mentally unwell Don Drummond was arrested for the murder of his girlfriend, the dancer Margerita. In August 1965, barely a week after the demise of the original Skatalites, The Soul Brothers (featuring ex-Skatalites members Jackie Mittoo, Roland Alphonso, Johnny Moore and Lloyd Brevitt) were up and running as the new house band at Studio One. Other members in this group included Wallin Cameron (guitar) and Bunny Williams (drums). This release could just as easily have been called Rolando Alphonso and The Soul Brothers or just The Soul Brothers as the group were essentially a collective, releasing material under their own name or under a nominal leader (usually Jackie Mittoo or Rolando Alphonso). The group line-up changed over time with Bobby Ellis (trumpet), Bryan Atkinson (bass), Dennis Campbell (Sax), Harry Haughton (guitarist) and Joe Isaacs (drummer) replacing various members alongside the ever present Jackie Mittoo. The Soul Brothers mix of musical styles is described as Ska, Jump-Up and Soul sounds. The opening track "Last Train to Skaville" signalled the end of the Ska era, as the Soul Brothers started to forge a new sound that by 1967 had become known as Rocksteady, a slowed down funky version of Ska. The main difference between the sound of The Skatalites and The Soul Brothers is the arrival of electric instrumentation such as Jackie¹s organ as well as electric guitar on some tracks. In 1967 Clement Dodd decided to take a group of musicians to England. Alongside the singers Alton Ellis and Ken Boothe, he asked Roland Alphonso, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Moore, Lloyd Brevett, Bunny Williams and Errol Walters. This group would be named The Soul Vendors and signalled the end of the short-lived Soul Brothers. Shortly afterwards Jackie Mittoo recorded his first solo album "Jackie Mittoo in London" with The Soul Vendors. For the next three years Jackie Mittoo came into his own, as in-house producer and arranger at Studio One, as well as his solo career. In 1968 he emigrated to Canada continuing to return to Jamaica to record for Studio One. These early recordings show the roots of a sound that Jackie Mittoo made uniquely his own.

Coxsone Dodd pioneered nearly every new form of Jamaican music as it developed over time and this album includes Ska, Dancehall, Roots, Rocksteady, DJ, Lovers and more. This is probably the best entry of the many Soul Jazz Studio One releases if you're after a primer in the Studio One sound. It's all here from the stomping Ska of the Skatalites to The Lone Ranger's Rub-a-dub stylee! Like it says on the wrapper 'Classics' pretty much sums it up.

From Blues parties in London, Birmingham, Bristol etc Lovers Rock quickly became one of the UK’s finest-ever musical movements. Sweet harmonies, soulful reggae, love songs – the key ingredients of Lovers Rock - were all based on the revival of many of the classic Rocksteady harmony groups of the late 60s and early 70s, such as The Heptones, Carlton and The Shoes, Larry & Alvin, The Paragons, that Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd’s Studio One and rival Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle label produced hit after hit with as they fought for dominance in the dancehalls of Kingston. As well as these classic harmony groups, this album also features fine contributions from many of the reggae greats – Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson – All artists who became stars at the legendary Studio One Records which Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, describes as "The University of Reggae".

After initially emerging out of the post-rave scene, Jungle quickly evolved, and by 1993 was now drawing on the slow, heavy bass-lines and Ragga vocals of Jamaican music. Whilst many would come to see this era as a short-lived phase in the evolution of Drum and Bass history (Ragga influenced Jungle was all but over by 1995) this album counters this theory showing that the roots of Jungle started much further back - in the UK’s vibrant Dancehall scene of the 1980s. Ragga influenced Jungle always works best as a clash. The double-time drums against the slow bass-lines, the Jamaican or Jamaican-influenced vocals against the dark, contemporary rhythms of young UK producers. The three main reggae Sound-systems in London between 1985-1990 were Saxon, Unity and Sir Coxsone. Before they were re-born as The Ragga Twins, brothers Flinty Badman and Demon Rockers were the MCs for North London’s premier Unity sound-system performing over strictly Reggae music seven days a week. Similarly Asha Senator – along with his partner on the mic, Smiley Culture, rose up from their own local Brixton based sound-system, which they built from scratch, to front the mighty Saxon Sound-system. Both hugely popular sounds, The Unity sound-system had the advantage of a strong relationship with legendary Jamaican producer King Jammy, who gave them upfront exclusives on any new Jammys release months before any other sound-systems could get hold of them. As King Jammy was the prime innovator of Jamaican digital dancehall this was quite a weapon to hold. Philip ‘PJ’ Johnson and Carl ‘Smiley’ Hyman ran their own small North London Sound-system along with friend DJ Hype. Initially the music had been strictly Reggae but after Smiley had visited his mum who lived in New York in 1986, they began to drop the occasional hip-hop tune into their set. This developed further as they then started MCing in Jamaican style over the breaks. By 1988, PJ and Smiley had begun to make records as Shut Up and Dance. As avid hip-hop dancers both PJ and Smiley initially wanted to make what they called ‘fast hip-hop’, (mirroring the speed of the break in old funk tunes) so they were somewhat surprised when a friend told them that a record they had made was being played at an acid-house club. It was indeed true and soon they began to hear their music being played on all the radio pirates. Although they never really got involved in the rave scene they started to make records for it. In their own minds they made records with ‘one-side house, one-side hip-hop’. In fact they were making proto-jungle and when they joined forces with their MC heroes from their youth, The Ragga Twins, they paved the way for the union of Rave and Reggae culture. By 1994 Jungle was officially going over-ground as General Levy and M-Beat’s ‘Incredible’ hit the charts. M-Beat was a young underground jungle producer and General Levy another of the leading lights of the UK Dancehall scene: Growing up in multi-racial Harlesden, by fourteen Levy started his first sound-system with friends called Third Dimension. From here he went on to MC for a number of North London sounds such as Vigilante and Java Nuclear Power before arriving at Tipperton Sound where he built his reputation as one of the finest UK MCs. At the start of the 1990s he signed to the important London reggae label, Fashion Records, alongside fellow MCs Smiley Culture and Asha Senator. Both London’s Fashion and Greensleeves record labels had championed Jamaican and UK-based Jamaican music throughout the 1980s, so it was a logical progression for them to start making jungle records in the following decade. As numerous young UK jungle producers sampled their favourite Jamaican Ragga artist, Fashion and Greensleeves (as well as UK reggae distributor Jetstar) invited young UK-based Jungle mixers to legally work with Jamaican artists. Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Barrington Levy all got re-worked by the likes of junglists Congo Natty, DJ Monk and more. Soul Jazz Records latest journey features all-time classic jungle anthems such as General Levy’s ‘Incredible’ and UK Apachi and Shy FX’s ‘Original Nuttah’ alongside some serious Ragga heavyweight tunes like Cutty Ranks ‘Limb By Limb’ and Congo Natty’s classic re-make of Barrington Levy’s Under Me Sensi’. The album tells the story of how Jungle developed out of acid house but with its roots in the UK Dancehall scene of the 1980s and comes with extensive sleevenotes, exclusive interviews and photography.

Limited New Edition, Green Vinyl Studio Roots Vol. 2 delves deeper into the vaults of the legendary Jamaican Reggae label and features rare and classic roots as well as an unprecedented seven unreleased tracks that up till now have never seen the light of day. Roots and rastafarian music was being recorded at Studio One by Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd from the early 1960s onwards to the 1990s and this album reflects the depth and diversity of roots music at the label. From the slow-ska of Dudley Sibbley, to the deep instrumental jazz cuts of Cedric Im Brooks over classic roots rhythms such as "Satta Massagana" to Winston Mathews stunning eerie version of Bob Marley and the Wailers "Sun Is Shining". The Zion All Stars features the Burro rastafarian drumming of Count Ossie and the Mystic Revelation of Rastafari. This album features many of the classic Studio One artists – Willie Williams, Tommy McCook, Cedric Brooks, The Gladiators, Vin Gordon – as well as many less well known artists – all who produced classic roots music under the guidance of producer Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd and recorded at the legendary Studio One Records which Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records, describes as "The University of Reggae".

For this Studio One release we return to the roots of Reggae music-The Soundsystem. Throughout the late 1950s and 1960s Soundsystems played throughout the city of Kingston, Jamaica. As well as Sir Coxsone's Downbeat Soundsystem other famous Soundsystem operators included Duke Reid (the Trojan), Prince Buster, Tom the Great and King Edwards. These Soundystems were the birthplace of much of Jamaica's musical culture ­ Soundclashes, Dancehall and the idea of the Toaster who sang over records- theDJ. As ever Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd led the field and so for this release the focus is on DJ's at Studio One and features legendary toasters such as Denis Alcapone, Dillinger and Prince Far I as well as a host of rare material by lesser known artists. Also included is Count Machuki ­ the original DJ- the first man ever to speak over the mic-at Sir Coxsone¹s Downbeat Sound System- from where it all began. As Steve Barrow (author of The Rough Guide to Reggae/Blood and Fire Records) writes in the sleevenotes, Jamaican deejay music is the source for all Rap music: From Count Machuki talking over records on Sir Coxsone's legendary Downbeat Sound System this style would eventually travel to America when the Jamaican-born Kool Herc began playing at Block parties (a version of the Kingston Soundsystem parties) in the Bronx. Cutting up rare-groove classics for the first B-Boys to rap over, Hip-Hop was born and theDJ music that had started on the early Soundsystems of Kingston would go on to conquer the world! Studio One Records is the original Jamaican record label. Studio One Records started the career of hundreds of Jamaican artists from Bob Marley to The Skatalites, from Horace Andy to The Heptones. Studio One DJs (compiled by Mark Ainley) is the next in the series of releases where Soul Jazz Records are showcasing the music of Studio One, the label that literally defines Reggae. Jamaican record producer Clement “Sir Coxsone” Dodd was responsible for the career of pretty much every internationally renowned reggae artist and was a significant figure in the evolution of reggae and ska. We’re talking Lee “Scratch” Perry, Prince Buster, Toots and the Maytals and Burning Spear to name a few. His recording facility – Studio One – was the starting point for local Jamaican talent and even recorded the first tracks by Bob Marley and the Wailers. The songs collected on Coxsone’s Music 2 are from the period when Sir Coxsone ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Featuring early material by Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook (eventually The Skatalites), Toots and The Maytals, and youngsters such as Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson and Owen Gray; this is simply an essential addition to any music collection 3 x LP
